Applicants & New Students: Before Admission

The University of Ibadan does not discriminate on the basis of race, colour, sex, sexual orientation or preference1age, religion, national or ethnic origin, or physically challenged in the admission of students to all rights, privileges, programmes and activities generally accorded or made available to students in the administration of its educational policies and scholarship facilities.

Applications are considered on a competitive basis by the Departmental and Faculty Admissions Committees which evaluates all available information and selects the best qualified applicants from those whose credentials meet the standards for admission.

In every case, decisions are reached through a comparison of the academic merits of all applicants applying in the same field. A bachelor’s degree in a broad programme of general education is normally prerequisite for admission but is not sufficient in itself.

Foreign applicants are expected to have bachelor’s degree with at least a Second Class Upper Division from Universities recognised by the Senate. Since the language of instructions in the University of Ibadan is English, proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and understanding English is required for admission.

(a) All application forms are to be submitted on-line.

(b) Incomplete information from an applicant may delay or halt action on such application.

(c) A candidate may apply to only one department or programme.

(d) Applicants are to upload their relevant credentials and submit along with their application electronically

(e) Acknowledgement of Application

Applicants would be informed electronically (through the e mail addresses provided in the electronically filled Application form) of progress in the processing of their forms.

(i) Full-Time Admission

Full-time admission can be offered only to candidates who satisfy the School of Postgraduate Studies that they are not in employment, or that they have been released by their employers to undertake full-time studies. Candidates found to have made a false declaration in this regard shall be asked to withdraw from the University.

(ii) Part-Time Admission

Candidates may be admitted to part-time registration, if they are on the academic staff of the University or can satisfy the School of Postgraduate Studies that facilities for their work as part-time students are adequate. Candidates applying for part-time registration may be asked to show evidence of release by their employers.

(a) Candidates for admission to higher degree programmes shall normally be graduates of the University of Abuja or other Universities/Institutions recognised by the Senate. Admission shall be made by the School of Postgraduate Studies on the recommendation of the appropriate Departmental and Faculty Postgraduate Committees.

(b) Candidates without any previous higher degrees in the relevant discipline may be admitted only to either the Degree of Master or the Professional Degree of Master.

(c) Candidates with recognised “Research Higher” Degree in the relevant discipline may be admitted to the M.Phil or Ph.D. degree programmes as appropriate.

(d) Where, in respect of an otherwise eligible candidate with a higher degree, a firm recommendation for admission to the Ph.D. degree programme cannot be made, a Faculty may recommend that a candidate be admitted provisionally to the M.Phil/Ph.D. programme.

 (e) Candidate for Postgraduate studies into the University of Abuja must have obtained at least (5) credits including English and Mathematics in not more than two sittings in WASC NECO GCE (Ordinary Level) or their equivalent.

(f) Candidate applying for the M.A., M.Ed., M. Eng., MVPH, MVPM and M.Sc. degrees in any field must have obtained a Bachelor’s degree with at least second class lower division in the relevant discipline.

(g) A Candidate for PhD in any Programme of the University of Abuja must have obtained a minimum weighted average score of 60% (4 points) letter grade “B” average performance in the Master’s Degree

(h) A Candidate applying for the PhD with a Master’s Degree from any other University, who in his/her Masters study had not previously taken the compulsory courses or their equivalent, similar to the courses in the University of Abuja shall, on admission be required to offer and pass such courses with a minimum of 60% (4 points) or a letter grade “B.”

(i) Candidates seeking admission into any of the postgraduate Diploma Programmes must possess a university degree with a minimum grade of third class or HND with a minimum of Lower Credit.

(j) MBBS, BDS is required for MPH Community Medicine while health-related degree is required for MPH Sexual and Reproductive Health

NOTE: PhD, candidates should attach a maximum of 500 words research proposal.

Application Fee: A non-refundable Application fee of N20,500.00 should be paid to the University of Abuja Account through REMITA via the University of Abuja Portal. NOTE: Applicants are advised to access REMITA through the University of Abuja Portal below for record purposes.

How to Apply:

New and Existing Applicant

All interested candidates are expected to have a personal e-mail address which must not be shared with others for the purpose of this application.

• Visit https://portal.uniabuja.edu.ng
• Click on “Click here to apply“
• On the left pane, click on Postgraduate
• Enter the requested details (surname, first name, other names, email and phone number) and click Next
• On the payment preview page, click on Generate RRR
• Click make payment and you will be redirected to the remita platform, enter your card details (Master Card or Visa Card)
• After a successful payment, you will be redirected back to the portal and application number generated and you will be logout out.
• Click on “Main Login”, enter the generated application number and surname as the password to continue the application process

The School of Postgraduate Studies, University of Abuja, requires three e-letters of recommendation from faculty members or others well acquainted with the student’s academic work. Please note that the referee forms are part of the on-line application to be completed and submitted electronically.

Official transcripts of all degrees completed are to be mailed directly to the

Deputy Registrar/Admission Officer School of Postgraduate Studies. If the Registrar of an applicant’s University will provide an official copy to the School directly, applicants must enclose along with the application an unofficial or student’s copy of the transcript for temporary reference. To prevent delays, applicants should make adequate arrangements with their Registrars to provide transcripts before the stipulated deadline.
